Refractory Metal Powders for Powder Injection Molding

Refractory metals are usually processed from powder into mill products, such as rod and plate, which must be further machined or fabricated into final parts. The ability to directly fabricate net-shape refractory metal parts via powder injection molding(PIM)is a highly desirable method of reducing processing costs and material usage but is mostly limited to applications that do not have significant mechanical property requirements, such as radiation shields, cell phone vibrator weights, medical electrodes, and heat sinks.As-molded polymer-refractory metal composite components can be used in some weighting and radiation shielding applications, but control of the powder characteristics is critical to obtain suitable rheological behavior.Other applications require a powder that also provides adequate sintering behavior. In some cases, sintering to high densities requires sub-micrometer sized powders, which present an even greater challenge for mixing and molding.Alloying additions make processing easier and improve room temperature properties but limit high temperature usage.Specific combinations of compositions and powder characteristics are identified for PIM of current and emerging refractory metal applications.
