Influence of Additives on Machinability of Sintered Steels

In this paper, effects of additives on properties and machinability of sintered low-alloy steels was studied.Hexagonal Boron Nitride(h-BN),Manganese Sulfide(MnS),Molybdenum Disulfide(MoS2),Agent1 and Agent2 were added separately as free-machining additives.Turning tests were carried out by metal ceramic tool.Surface quality and tool wear were investigated and tool wear mechanism was discussed. The deformation layer of sintered steels after turning was observed and hardness was measured. The results show that the machined surface roughness of FC0208 sintered steel usingMoS2 and MnS is lower than that using other free-machining additives, and the tool after turning MoS2 and MnS free-machining sintered steel shows smaller flank wear than that of other free-machining additives.SEM shows that deformation layer is found in FC0208 steels containing h-BN while machining at condition of cutting speed 1200rpm,feed rate 0.06mm/rev and depth of cut 0.2mm.
