High Temperature Sintering and Fast Cooling-the Economical Way to Produce Better Parts
Sintering of structural components is a standard process. In the last decades many scientific articles have been published describing the optimum sintering conditions and the effect of variations of process parameters.Higher sintering temperatures combined with controlled atmospheres and fast cooling are the key words. It is also a well-known fact that the sintering step contributes to 50%of the production cost in the conventional PM process.Consequently,it offers one of the biggest levers for cost reduction. But,although the advantages of modern sintering processes are known, the development of industrial scale sintering equipment has been very limited over the last decade.Parts producers tend to select classical sintering equipment, missing out on the great potentials new system could offer. In order to demonstrate the strength of high temperature sintering, fast cooling and controlled atmosphere,it was decided to build a new type of continuous sintering that can meet the theoretical requirements for the ideal sintering conditions. In this presentation the first sintering results are presented and discussed. The new furnace features a unique rapid cooling unit.Using fluid dynamic software cooling rates have been calculated as a function of gas flow.Microstructure of pm parts have been used to evaluate cooling rates and compare the results with the model predictions.
