Spark Plasma Sintering and Characterization of a Melt-spun Al-Mg-Si Alloy
Melt-spun ribbons of an Al-Mg-Si-(Cu)alloy were prepared and consolidated into bulk samples by spark plasma sintering under 440,460,500 and 520℃.Optimal melt-spinning parameters and hot extrusion temperature were obtained by using different spinning speeds, temperatures and extrusion ratio.Microstructure of the ribbon and the extruded samples were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry,x-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer and optical microscopy.Result showed that the ribbons were ultra-fine grained and after spark plasma sintering at 500℃,fine-grained bulk samples with a diameter of 20 mm and a relative density of 97%were obtained.Corrosion characteristics were determined by electrochemical and immersion experiments. The sintered sample exhibit slightly lesser corrosion resistance than that of the bulk alloy.
