Analysis of Rheological Behavior of Metal/Ceramic Mixed Feedstock in Injection Molding

The injection molding is an important process of powder injection molding technology for manufacturing the complex parts. An improper green body can cause defects such as crack, distortion, and warpage during a subsequent process. Therefore, rheological behavior of feedstock is needs to determine the suitability for molding. In this research, the rheological analysis of 17-4PH SS with 3 mol.%YSZ mixed feedstocks depending on YSZ powder ratio was carried out.Mixed powders were prepared with 4 different zirconia powder ratios,0,25,50,75 and 100 vol.%.The critical solid loading for each powder was measured by torque rheometer. The optimum solid loading was determined to 2 vol.%lower than critical solid loading. Each optimum feedstock viscosity was measured by the capillary rheometer.Through this experiment,non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior presented in all of the feedstocks. Also, flow index and flow activation energy were calculated. As a result, the flow index decreased with high zirconia powder ratio. However, flow activation energy was not significant change. In order to find out the optimal feedstock for injection process, the moldability index was compared to each feedstock. The results indicated that the feedstock with 25 vol.%zirconia was the most desirable for molding
