High Strength Austenitic Stainless Steel of Catamold(R)Feedstock from BASF
In nowadays Metal Injection Molding(MIM)technology is well known for making high quantities and complex metal components. It is generally understood the properties of the most common stainless steels,i.e.316L and 17-4PH.However,the technology trend and requests for MIM material in particular in electronic industry are getting higher.Such as high strength,non-magnetism,high corrosion resistance and good surface quality. This is a challenge material development. The paper describes that BASF has developed a polyacetal based MIM feedstock with the product name Catamold(R)PANACEA,which is a nickel free, high nitrogen stainless steel with high strength and also developed an austenitized 17-4PH grade is not original 17-4PH anymore as its design: a precipitation hardenable stainless.Catamold(R)feedstock from BASF provide the solution from the material and process development to achieve desired properties. In the paper, the mass production capability will be demonstrated as well. The final MIM components are non-magnetic and exhibit a high corrosion resistance as well as excellent mechanical properties.
