Manufacturing of Ti6Al4V Powder for SLM via Super-Speed Plasma Rotating Electrode Process

  It is demonstrated that the laser PSD(particle size distribution)of SS-PREP(super-speed plasma rotating electrode process)Ti6Al4V spherical powders fitts the log-normal distribution precisely and the average diameter d50 of the distribution,mainly affected by the rotating speed,has been well predicted by the deduced model in this work.The σ,the log-normal distribution factor of the laser PSD,decreases with the increment of the rotating speed ω.The model to predict the final PSD under equal process parameters with different rotating speeds has been found for SS-PREP Ti6Al4V,including the calculation of powder yield of the selected size range.The PSD results show that the main atomization model for Ti6Al4V under SS-PREP is DDF(direct drop formation).The mechanical properties of SLM-HT SS-PREP Ti6Al4V are analyzed,the results show that using PREP powders brings both higher yield strength and higher ductility with uniform structures of all directions.The SLM-HT SS-PREP Ti6Al4V parts have higher integrated mechanical properties of strength-elongation relationship than reported commercial results of previous works.Ti6Al4V spherical powders produced by SS-PREP have the excellent comprehensive performance for applications.
