Development of Powder Injection Molding Process for Si3N4 Ceramic Ball
Fabrication process for silicon nitride ceramic balls was developed by powder injection molding technology.Yttria and alumina as a sintering aid were added to improve the sintered density. The mixing was performed with twin-screw extruder mixer to fabricate the homogeneous feedstock.By optimizing the injection molding parameters, green parts without defects were obtained.A two-step debinding process was applied to remove the binders in the green parts.Solvent debinding was firstly conducted in n-hexane at 50 degrees Celsius.Thermal debinding was secondly conducted in air atmosphere based on thermogravimetric analysis results. The sintering was conducted in nitrogen atmosphere at 1800 degrees Celsius for 4 hours.Embedding powder was used to avoid dissociation of silicon nitride. The balls with about 5 mm diameter were finally fabricated with no defects.Thereafter, the density and mechanical properties such as hardness, bending strength and fracture toughness were measured by using rectangular standard specimens made with same optimal conditions. These results showed the desirable properties.
