Deterioration Causes Reduction of Recycled Copper Feedstocks in Metal Injection Molding

Using of the re-used feedstock of products such as the gate, runner, sprue, and the green parts during metal injection molding is a common route followed by the majority of metal injection molding(MIM)companies due to reducing the manufacturing cost.Unfortunately, the material property of these feedstocks will change due to the frequent number of recycling iterations. This study examines the practical approach to lower deterioration caused byfeedstock recycled and seeks to identify those beneficial combinations percentage of new and used feedstock where injection molding of green parts might be cost-effective.Current research on recycled feedstock deterioration reveals that mixing the proper percentage of new and used feedstock is effective in injection molding defects reduction and increasing the manufacturing yield. To find out the reason for feedstock deterioration, the properties such as melting points, spiral length, and viscosity were discussed. The oxygen content measurement shows oxidation amount of polystyrene(PS),polypropylene(PP),and paraffin wax(PW).As a result, with a combination of new feedstock(0R)and reused one(3R),there is significant manufacturing yields improvement with a percentage increase of up to 13.27%for(0R : 1R=70%: 30%).
