Cermet Reinforced Cemented Carbides
Cermet reinforced cemented carbides(CRCC)are composite materials consisting of uniformly distributed small cermet particles embedded within a WC-Co matrix.The aim of this work is to develop a material for cutting tools which combines the advantages of WC-Co cemented carbides and cermets,i.e.a high bending strength,high fracture toughness,good grinding properties and at the same time improved wear resistance.The values of hardness and fracture toughness are similar to those of conventional WC-Co cemented carbides.However,the transverse bending strength is lower.First machining tests with uncoated multifunction turning-drilling tools showed that the tool life of a CRCC with 13 wt%cermet is 15 times higher than that of uncoated WC-Co tools.
