Effect of Recycled Material in Cemented Carbides
Raw material(WC,Co etc.)cost constitutes a major portion of overall cost of cemented carbide products.Soft and hard(sintered)scraps are sometimes recycled during the production of cemented carbide to reduce the cost as well as impact on the environment. While use of recycled material could consume less energy,it is important to ensure that the process is robust enough to handle such raw material fluctuations and sufficient quality control measures are in-place such that performance of the end product is not compromised. In the current paper we discuss processing challenges associated with the use of recycled material and examine effects of different raw material sources(virgin/APT,soft scrap, zinc reclaim scrap etc.)on the microstructure and properties of cemented carbides.
