Effect of N Content and Cubic Phase Composition on the Structure of Gradient Cemented Carbide-Computer Simulation and Experimental Investigation

The influences of N content and total cubic phase content(particularly here raises Ta+Nb volume with Ta/Nb ratio and Ti content kept)on the thickness of gradient layer and the chemical composition of surface layer of cemented carbide were studied by theoretical calculation and experimental investigations.Volumes of each phase in alloy and chemical composition distributions in surface layer were calculated by DICTRA software. The microstructure and elements concentration distribution were analyzed via Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM)and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer(EDS),respectively. The simulation result shows a good agreement with the experimental results. The thickness of face-centered cubic phase free layer(fcc-free layer)decreases as the volume fraction of cubic phase increasing, while increases as improving N content.Cubic phase volume exhibits more remarkably effect on microstructure of fcc-free layer than N content does.As N content and cubic phase volume increasing,N activity goes up and N decomposition becomes faster. The denitrification process in cemented carbide closely correlates with the cubic phase and N composition in alloy.
