Evolution of Microstructure and Performance in WC-Co Cemented Carbides with TaC Addition
Submicron WC-Co cemented carbides with various TaC contents at 0-3.0%(mass fraction)were investigated through SEM,XRD,EPMA analysis and mechanical tests. When TaC was less than certain content,it mainly dissolved in cobalt phase proved by XRD analysis, contributing to the cobalt solution strengthening.Whats more,TaC acted as grain growth inhibitor which resulted in WC grain refinement,as well as the increasing in hardness and transverse rupture strength(TRS).As the TaC addition became excessive, the inhomogeneity in microstructure was presented with non-uniformly distributed clusters composed of precipitated(Ta,W)C phases and WC particles.Meanwhile, the hardness and TRS slowly increased due to the opposite effects between WC grain refinement and the brittle clusters.High temperature hardness was also measured which presented a positive correlation to TaC content.Particularly, significant improvement of high temperature hardness was found in alloy containing TaC compared with TaC free sample under 1000℃.
