Slender Steel Ingot with Low Taper and High Aspect Ratio

  Solidification in the ingot casting of a low alloy steel in a high aspect ratio mould (H/D=8) with lower taper 5% for making a 3.25T ingot weight has been examined.The ingot mould was examined for its solidification using FEM simulation software THERCAST.Parameters such as solid front movement,temperature variation,air gap formation,thermal gradient ahead of solidification front,extent of shrinkage piping and porosity have been studied,with the progress of solidification.The simulation showed that the mould slenderness promoted a tendency to form porosity at the core of the ingot based on Niyama criteria.The simulation indicated large regions of porosity.One typical ingot was validated in an actual experiment.The simulated and actual ingot quality showed close match.Based on simulation,microstructure formation and columnar to equiaxed transition was predicted in the ingot.
