PIV Measurement of Flow Field in a Water Model of a Continuous Slab Casting Mold
Flow field in the mold is usually investigated by mathematical modeling and water modeling.Combined laser technique and digital image processing technique, particle image velocimetry(PIV)technique is an accurate measurement method of velocity fields and has been successfully used to investigate a wide range of flow phenomena.Water modeling with PIV is useful and practical tool to research flow field in the mold. The flow field in the mold with section of 1800mm ×230mm was measured with PIV system replacing traditional flow field survey technique, wave gage and velocity instrument in this paper. The effects of immersion depth, bottom shape and outlet angle of submerged entry nozzle(SEN)on flow field in the mold were investigated. The results show the top-surface level fluctuations, surface velocities, impacting depths on narrow face and vortex core positions of upper inverse flow are differently influenced by the above three factors. The optimum parameters are the SEN of concave outlet shape, the outlet angle of 15° down in the experiment, and the immersion depth of about 140mm.
