Modified discrete vortex method to simulate the unsteady aerodynamics of two-dimensional insect-like flapping wing models in hover

  The objective of this paper is to develop and validate an efficient tool for the simulation of the two-dimensional(2D)unsteady aerodynamics of hovering insect wings by using modified discrete vortex method(MDVM).The present method is an improvement of the conventional discrete vortex methods by including viscous diffusion and skin friction term.Not only aerodynamic forces but also the wake visualization derived by MDVM shows a very good agreement with higher-order methods and experiments.The paper also shows that what makes MDVM preferable to other numerical methods is the very low computational cost that may be rewarding for insect aerodynamics investigation.
