EKF Based Wind Velocity Estimation without an Airspeed Sensor for Unpowered Gliding Vehicle
In this paper,in order to estimate air speed and wind speed using only GPS/INS navigation system without any additional equipment such as pitot tube, extended Kalman filter is developed using 6 DOF equation of motion. The state variables of the filter are defined to air speed, rotational angular rate and attitude of the body frame axis. The measurements of the filter are rotational angular velocity and attitude from the GPS/INS integrated system. After the air speed is estimated, the wind velocity can be obtained by calculating the difference between the air speed and the ground velocity observed from the navigation system. But,the algorithm does not consider error covariance of measured ground velocity. To solve this problem, additional Kalman filter is constructed whose states are wind speed along the x,y,z axis and measurements are estimated wind velocity from above extended Kalman filter. The simulation results are shows that the estimation performance is improved by additional Kalman filter.
