Optimal Ascending Trajectory Design of High Altitude Long Endurance UAVs Using Wind Modeling

This paper designs the optimal ascending trajectory of HALE UAVS.HALE platform in this paper, which has 20km target altitude, has very light weight relative to wing span and uses electric power with solar cell.During the ascending to target altitude it passes through jet stream because its target altitude is upper troposphere and stratosphere. So it is important to establish a modeling about jet stream. After the jet stream is modeled it is used to design an optimal ascending trajectory considering practical constraints.GPOPS2 which uses a pseudo spectral method is used for trajectory optimization problem and aircraft is represented three-dimensional point-mass model for convergence efficiency. Then with varying cost functions compare characteristics of minimum time trajectory with jet stream, without jet stream, and minimum energy trajectory.
