Effect of Close-Coupled Canards on Longitudinal Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Supersonic Configuration

In this study, interference effects of close-coupled canards on longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a supersonic transport configuration were investigated at low speed by wind tunnel experiments.Force and moment data were measured with an internal six-component balance system; oilflow visualization was conducted to observe the flow pattern on the model surface.A parametric study was conducted for the canard with variation in the location, deflection angle and size.It was shown that a suitable arrangement of the canard could provide additional pitching moment, delay vortex interaction on the wing and improve the linearity of lift and pitching moment for longitudinal control.
