Application of SSPC Method in the Stability Assessment of Highway Rock Slopes in Yunnan Province of China

The stability assessment of rock slopes is always a hot and difficult problem.Rock mass classification systems provide a good way for fast assessment of rock slope stability, since the systems can not only consider many factors affecting rock mass stability, but also can obtain a quantitative experience equation. The slope stability probability classification (SSPC) method is a new approach for slope stability assessment proposed by Hack in 1998.It considers three types of rock mass by a three-step analysis method, and assesses the failure probability based on the analyses of potential failure mechanisms and modes of slopes. In contrast with other slope stability classification systems, the approach has made great progress. In this paper, we introduced the SSPC method and applied it into road excavation analysis of rock slopes in Yunnan province of China. The application results indicate that the accuracy of the SSPC method is 70% in the stability assessment of 10 highway slopes in Yunnan province.
