The Fiscal Crisis and Public Sector Service Delivery in the United States

The economic crisis in the United States is requiring public administrators to rethink the services they provide and how they provide them.As public administrators strive to achieve cost efficiencies they struggle with competing expectations of maintaining current service levels and service quality with far fewer resources. When budgets are restricted, in addition to looking for new revenue sources, public administrators look to alternative service delivery options such as shared service delivery, privatization, consolidation of services, as well as the elimination of services.Utilizing quantitative and qualitative analysis this paper explores the financial realities of the current economic crisis as well as the strategies being implemented by local governments to close projected budget gaps. This analysis contributes to a more robust understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing public administrators as they redefine and reexamine governments role in a complex world.
