Variational characteristics of strain energy diagram for characterizing fatigue behavior
Failure due to fatigue,i.e.,repeated loading,is multidisciplinary and is the most common cause of engineering failure.Despite the enormous progress made in developing fatigue behavior models and design principles over more than 160 years,the mechanism of fatigue is still not fully understood.The recently-developed multistage strength degradation theory provides a lucid description,stating that fatigue is caused by the sporadic change of cracking behavior in a material,which can lead to intermittent strength reduction of a system under cyclic loading.
