Characteristics of Ethical Leadership: A Cross-cultures Comparative Analysis
With emerging ethics scandals in business, government, non-profits organizations, the discussion associated with leader ethic in the organizations, has become prominent in public and business management literature in recent years. Some scholars develop an ethical leadership concept which resides at the intersection of leadership and ethics. This study explores the concept and characteristics of ethical leadership by reviewing the relevant social scientific English literature relating to ethics and leadership from different nations. It shows that scholars reached some basic consensus on some characters of ethical leadership despite existing diversity of value viewpoints. In personality characteristics, although the researchers used different words, most literature believe that ethical leaders are honesty, trustworthiness, integrity, consideration, respect for others, and selfdiscipline. In behaviors characters, most scholars endorse that ethical leaders behaviors are altruistic, people-orientation and power sharing. They consider the ethical consequences of the decision; set clear ethical standards and practice it, frequently communicate with the followers and use rewards and punishments to encourage the followers ethical conduct. The conclusion of the study laid the foundation for building the global standard of ethical leadership.
