Effect of the tempering treatment on the proportion of retained austenitein SKD-11

The volume fraction of retained austenite of SKD11 was studied with different conditions for quenching and tempering. Microstructures of the specimens were also observed by SEM. In the experiments, different conditions for quenching and tempering were setup. The volume fraction of retained austenite was reduced to 2.2% with the condition of quenching at 1025℃ for 3 hours and double tempering at 510℃.By analyzing the microstructures of these specimens with different treatment conditions, the case with higher quenching temperature has a relatively smaller carbide size. The distribution of carbides of specimen under high temperature for quenching and tempering was not only in the grain boundary but also appeared in the grain compared with the one under lower temperature for quenching and tempering.
