Study of plasma nitriding of austenitic stainless steel
304 and 316L stainless steels were treated by plasma nitriding at different temperatures and time. The microstructures of the plasma nitrided layers were observed by metallographic microscope. The hardness of nitrided layers were tested by digital microhardness tester. Corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided layers was investigated by salt spray corrosion box. The results indicated that nitrided depth and microhardness of the nitrided samples increased with the increase of nitriding temperature, corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided layers reduced. Microhardness of the nitrided samples almost without changed ,but nitrided depth obviously increased,(when nitriding temperature was high 400 ℃), corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided layers reduced, with the increase of nitriding time. The hardness , depth and he anticorrosion to salt atmosphere of nitrided layers of 316L stainless steel were higher than 304 stainless steel Under homogeneous test condition.
