Problem and suggestion to determine p coefficient by steel foil carbonizing method

In this paper carbonizing process of steel foil was simulated by value -calculation-method. According to the simulation test result, P coefficient was calculated with commonly used formula of steel foil carbonizing test. The result indicates that foil thickness, carbonizing time, carbon diffusion coefficient in foil apparently affect the value of P coefficient calculated with the formula. The value is always smaller than truth value and decreases with decreasing of carbon diffusion coefficient in foil. The paper deems that the formula is suitable only when carbon diffusion coefficient in foil is unlimited, otherwise the value of P calculated with the formula is not correct, and gives out false information about the influence of other test factors. Therefore the abuse of the commonly used formula is the main reason of inaccurate value of P coefficient calculated with it .The paper proposes a new calculation method and a supplement test. By the new method , near truth value of P coefficient and the carbon diffusion coefficient of the steel tested can be obtained at the same time.
