Castor oil: Studies for heat treatment applications
Currently, there is increasing global interest in the use of biodegradable fluids from renewable sources, such as vegetable oils, for industrial applications which include metalworking quenchants. In addition to their biodegradability, vegetable oils have the additional advantage of being generally non-toxic. In view of the potential industrial importance of biodegradable fluids a study was conducted to evaluate and compare the physical, thermal-oxidative stability and quenching properties of castor oil and selected derivatives versus a conventional and accelerated petroleum-derived quench oil. The results of this study are described here.
