Studies on effect of normalizing on grain refining of large forgings for LP rotors based on numerical and physical simulation
Experimental investigations, numerical simulation and physical simulation were undertaken to study the effect of normalizing on grain refining of large LP rotors. The samples were pre-treated to obtain the coarse grain as that after forging, and subsequent normalizing experiment indicated that lower normalizing temperature could lead to a better grain refining effect. The grain size evolvement of the centre of the LP rotor in normalizing in production was previewed by the method of combining numerical simulation with physical simulation in laboratory condition. The grain size was found decreased with the increasing of normalizing times. Due to the grain size at the centre of the LP rotor was the most coarsened in the processing, the proposed four times normalizing process can refine the grain size of the forging with diameter of 2.8m to finer than ASTM No. 5.9.
