Expansion of Titanium Sponge Production Capacity
In 2006,OSAKA Titanium technologies Corporation boasted an annual titanium sponge production capacity of 24,000 metric tons. To cope with the recent increases in demand for metallic titanium, we developed a production capacity expansion plan for increasing annual production of titanium sponge by 14,000 metric tons. Major enhancements include: in the titanium ore acceptance step, larger and simpler handling equipment have been adopted; in the TiCl4 production line, the number of available chlorinators has been increased and an additional distillation column has been installed to provide the amount of TiCl4 required for manufacturing the planned amount of titanium sponge; for the reduction-separation process and MgCl2 electrolysis process, new lines have been installed adjacent to the existing plant; for the reduction-separation process, the batch size has been enlargeddo 13 metric tons/batch) to increase the production rate;the electrolysis process is now placed adjacent to the reduction-separation process to improve efficiency in transporting molten Mg and molten MgCl2 between these processes; and, for the crushing process,one additional crushing line has been installed and floor layout for the crushing equipment has been optimized to improve crushing capability. Through these efforts, we attained expansion of annual production capacity by 14,000 metric tons in 2011,and now boast an annual titanium sponge production capacity of 38,000 metric tons. By the first quarter of 2012, we will have further expanded our annual production capacity by another 2,000 metric tons. Thus,our annual titanium sponge production capacity will reach 40,000 metric tons.
