A Study on the Theoretical Definition of Landscape Architecture
There are various definitions of landscape architecture, which all have promoted the development of the discipline but at the same time made confusions for an agreement. This paper based on the logical rules of concept definition, investigates the special relationship between landscape architecture and social context, design ideas and methods, and various forms and scales of human settlements, through the viewpoints of historical development of landscape architecture and the scope of contemporary practices. It shows landscape architecture has been practiced for centries. With the development of human settlements and the evolvement of outlook on human settlements from house, to community, to city, to region and to the globe, it shows a comprehensive demand in outdoor environments. Additionally, the system of landscape architecture knowledge is also of a comprehensive nature. The paper concludes that landscape architecture is a comprehensive discipline about outdoor environments of human settlements with various scales.
