Acoustic emission for tracing damage in wooden artworks

The main objective of this paper is to present characteristic features of acoustic emission (AE) signals related towood fracturing to propose proper configuration of AE monitoring based on analyzed data. Performed experiments allow for identification of AE signals generated during mechanical tests of samples made of various wood species, in different anatomical directions and varying moisture content (MC). Such identification is based on the frequency, amplitude envelope, duration and energy of these signals. The main barrier in wider application of AE in conservation practice is lack of straightforward interpretation of AE meaningful for practitioners responsible for preservation of art objects. Therefore, a simple and effective method of AE energy calibration is proposed to correlate signals recorded during in situ monitoring with actual risk of mechanical macro damage of object.
