Leakage AE signal detection in pressure vessel by laser sensor

Acoustic Emission (AE) is an effective method to detect the leakage in pressure vessel. In present, the usual method is to attach the PZT acoustic sensor on the vessel surface to examine the surface wave generated by the acoustic signal source. For the large structure such as the oil storage tank and action tank in chemical industry , a great number of sensors needed to monitor the whole structure, for the dangerous conditions such as the place with position and, high temperature, nuclear radiation ,it is dangerous to arrange the sensors. In this paper, a noncontact laser sensor is used to detect the leakage AE signal. The sensing equipment is installed away from the tested object and the sensor can measure the multipoint by scan. The experiment results on a simulated pressure vessel show that the laser sensor can capture the surface wave induced by the leakage AE signal sensitively. By the analysis of those AE signal, the character signal of the leakage can be obtained.
