Dispersibility of SZP Antimicrobial agents in Silicone Denture Soft Lining Materials and their Effect on Operational Performance
The purpose of this study is to investigate thedispersibility of silver-zirconium phosphate (SZP) nano-inorganicantimicrobial agent in silicone denture soft liningmaterials and the effect of adding the agent on operationalperformances. SZP was added using the method of high shearemulsification dispersion. The mass percent of antimicrobialagent was 2%, 5%, and 10%. Silicone soft lining materialswithout antimicrobial agent served as controls. Dispersibility ofSZP in silicone soft lining materials was observed under scanningelectron microscope (SEM), and the attribution of the elementson the cross section was analyzed by energy dispersive analysissystem (EDS). Operational properties of materials with andwithout SZP were tested to find out the effect of adding SZP onthese properties, including mixing time, consistency, workingtime and setting time. By SEM observation, inorganic nano-granuleswere well-distributed in silicone substrate. Elementanalysis showed even distribution of Zr and Ag, which confirmedthere were not obvious nano-agglomerates, and in turn verifiedthe excellent dispersibility of SZP in tested silicone materials.EDS spectra showed that the mass proportion of Zr in samplescontaining 5% SZP was low, suggesting the main content was stillsilicon compound. Adding SZP by the proportions mentionedabove prolonged mixing time of the material, i.e. the easy-mixedcapability of the material was decreased. But consistency,working time and setting time of the material were notsignificantly affected. The method of high shear emulsificationdispersion is capable to make SZP nano-inorganic antimicrobialagent distribute evenly in silicone soft lining substrate, withoutobvious agglomeration. Adding SZP will not significantly affectoperational properties of silicone denture soft lining material.
