Warehouse Layout Optimization Considering Distance and Labor Factor for Mixed Model Assembly Workshop

Warehouse operations and management is an important part of the production logistics management. The warehouse layout problem is a key issue to warehouse operations. A mixed-assembly workshop producing airconditioners has a characteristic that it produces many different types of products within a very short production cycle time. The speed of the labor picking parts from the warehouse can not satisfy the requirement of the production cycle time. To solve this problem, this paper puts forward two mathematical models respectively with the cycle time as a constraint to optimize the layout of the material items in the storage racks, one with one storage rack and the other with two storage racks. The aim of this study is to minimize the travel distance of the labor picking parts and shorten the total time of collecting parts. The mathematical models are solved by branch and bound algorithm. As picking parts from different levels of storage racks will cost different time, a proposed multiple-level warehouse optimization scheme is discussed in detail. Based on the above methods, the layout of different parts in a warehouse for an air-conditioner workshop is optimized. The optimization schemes are verified by the warehouse simulation model.
