Does Demographic Change Hamper the Economic Growth of China? -Based on SYS-GMM
This paper examines the impact of demographic change economic growth by using a panel dataset consist of 29 provinces in China over a 20 year period. Different economic indicators are introduced into the traditional growth regression framework that are estimated using the system-generalized method SYS-GMM. The model show that the old dependency ratio has a significant positive effect on growth. The population growth rate has no effect on economic growth. The working age population rate has positive effect on growth rates but the coefficients associated with the estimates are insignificant. The findings are robust after controlling for other institutional and demographic variables.
