How Sensitive are We to the Variation in “Reflection Optical Density?
This study aims to comprehensively measure the perceptibility threshold across the reflection optical density (OD) domain. The perceptibility threshold steadily increases as the OD increases from the low to high density fields for cyan. However, for magenta and yellow, threshold increases from low to medium density fields and rapidly decreases from medium to high density fields. Density relies upon thickness of colorants used and traversing the entire optical path so does not account for any hue effects. However, channel dependency was observed in this study for measuring threshold visually.
