Development of Photographic Science and Technology for Advanced Devices

A color film is composed of silver halide (AgX) grains and layers of J-aggregated cyanine dyes as substrates and photosensitive organic semiconductors, respectively, and is therefore regarded as one of organic devices. Then, analyses are made among color films, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC), and organic thin-film solar cells in terms of the light absorption and exciton formation by organic semiconductors, the formation of interfaces between organic semiconductors and substrates, the electronic structure of the interfaces, the efficiency and rate of the light-induced electron injection from organic semiconductors into substrates, the transport of electronic carriers, and the stability of organic semiconductors. The knowledge accumulated for the development of color films for many years could serve as references to the designs of DSSC and organic thin-film solar cells
