The Future of Cancer Screening

Lung and ovarian cancers are two of the most deadly cancers in the world. One in 14 men and women will be diagnosed with lung cancer during their lifetime.1 The lifetime probability of developing ovarian cancer is 1.4% to 1.8%.2 More than 90% of people diagnosed with lung cancer and 50% of those diagnosed with ovarian cancer will die from the disease. The high mortality rate for lung and ovarian cancers is likely because both cancers are typically diagnosed late in the course of the disease, after the cancer has already metastasized. A tool for early detection of these cancers is,therefore, highly desirable.Yet,despite decades of research interest, neither lung nor ovarian cancer has an accepted screening tool.
