Effect of the sample size on the triazial behaviour of geoteztile-reinforced sand with numerical modelling

In this study effect of the sample size on the stress-strain behaviour and strength characteristics of geotextile reinforced sand has been determined with the PLAXIS finite element code. Size effect on the mechanical behaviour of geotextile-reinforced sand was investigated through varying the number of geotextile layers, confining pressure and type of geotextile. In order to study the effect of sample size, modelling was performed on samples with five different diameters. These diameters are: 38, 100, 200, 500 and 600 nun. The elastic-plastic Mohr-coulomb model has been used for modelling the sand behaviour. Results demonstated that the small-size samples showed higher peak strength and higher axial strain at the failure compared to large-size sample. The size effect influencing on the behaviour of samples, becomes further apparent when the number of geotextile layers increase or the confining pressure decrease. In addition, the result indicated that the size effect on the mechanical behaviour of reinforced sand decreased with the increasing of sample size. In this way, for samples with diameter higher than 600ram the size effect is ignored approximately.
