A Novel Concept for Waste Tyre Recycles: as Reburning Fuel for NOz Reduction

Waste tyres are increasing rapidly as solid waste disposal and its difficult to carry out the management problems associated with the waste tyre disposal. Its necessary to investigate new techniques for its utilization as resources. After reviewing briefly on the present techniques with the recycle of waste tyres, the authors proposed the use of waste tyres as a fuel to reduce both air emission and solid waste by applying them as a reburning fuel for Nox reduction. The major experimental apparatus is a two-stage furnace in series that allows us to simulate reburning and burnout zones, independently or simultaneously. In two-stage tests, the reburning furnace was set at 1150 or 1250℃ and the burnout furnace at 1150 ℃. The simulated flue gas had a composition of 16.8% CO2, 1.95% O2, and 0.05% NO in a helium base. Experiment results showed that a mixed fuel based on waste tire powder can reduce more than 80% of NO. This efficiency is even higher than that from methane reburning. This technology can dispose waste tires at a maximum extent by clean utilization of waste tire as a useful energy resource. This paper has implications for policy makers evaluating solid waste disposal options, as well as for boilers involved in determining appropriate Nox control strategies.
