Simulating Human Vision Interpolation using Discrete Wavelet Transform

This paper presents Haar wavelet transform as a tool to compute the interpolated versions of an image at optimum computational load. As a human observer moves closer to a scene or farther from the scene, the retinal image of the scene zooms in or out respectively. This work proposes application of Haar discrete wavelet transform and its inverse in a piecewise manner to compute variable scale interpolation of the images. Alongwith purely statistical measures of reconstruction, human vision based measure of picture quality scale and structural similarity is presented to benchmark the reconstruction from the interpolated images. Appropriate zero padding is used to make the images suitable for the required intermittent sub-sampling and the subsequent interpolation to the required scale. The main emphasis here is on the computation of variable size images unlike other major works which emphasize either on achieving better resolution for the increased size or enhancing the edges and textures using the statistical interpolation techniques. The concept of zeroeth level DWT has been presented which works as the basis for interpolating the images to achieve bigger size. The interpolated images to different sizes and the reconstructed images are benchmarked using the statistical parameters and the visual comparison. In some cases, it has been found that the interpolated images have better visual quality than the original ones. Also, the two element Haar DWT is computationally much efficient and yields comparable results statistically as well as visually. Other DWTs like Daubechies and higher element Haar are computationally heavy and do not yield visibly significant improvement in the results. Also, the two element Haar DWT closely simulates the Principle of “Lateral inhibitionobserved in human retina.
