ECONOMY OF USING HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE IN COLUMNS

This paper presents a set of investigation which incorporates High Performance Concrete (HPC) in modeling the costs of realistic multi stories (12 stories) building particularly, in (edge, corner, internal) columns members. To these ends, five categories of HPC have been utilized, namely Normal strength concrete NSC (35MPa), Medium strength concrete MSC (56 Mpa), High strength Concrete HSC (62 Mpa), Very High strength Concrete VHSC (98 Mpa), Ultra high strength concrete UHSC (120 Mpa) with slump value ranged from (100-120mm) designed by the help of a commercial software taking into account the Egyptian practice. The steel reinforcement ratios between maximum and minimum values have been taken into consideration as two design criteria. In addition, assessing the costeffectiveness of HPC is made with the inclusion of guidelines that estimate the initial construction total costs. Also, cost analysis and tender price for concrete items (direct cost, indirect cost, risk allowance, margin of profit) were intended. The findings of the study revealed that column dimensions decrease following an increase in a particular concrete class and the total cost price of column design with maximum reinforcement ratio, is reduced by 17%, 23%, 39% and 49% on average respectively compared with NSC. On the other hand, design with minimum reinforcement ratio, achieved more reductions of columns total costs by 34%, 39%, 49% and 52% on average compared with the NSC category respectively. Eventually, incorporating minimum reinforcement ratio in HPC columns leads to an economic output compared with utilizing maximum reinforcement ratio in design.
