A Resource Reservation and Distribution System over Satellite-Terrestrial Network
The Resource Reservation and Distribution Systemover satellite-terrestrial network, that we call the systemSkyLod for short, is a platform of learning on demandvia the hybrid transmission platform of satellite andground cable network. SkyLod uses receive-onlysatellite links for downstream data broadcasting, andterrestrial network (like public telephone networks) toprovide the upstream communication path. Thebroadcast nature of Satellite communication makes itan efficient way to distribute the large amount ofresources, such as multimedia courseware and digitallibrary materials. In this paper, we give the model ofSkyLod, propose a new and practical approach ofresource reservation and scheduling. The prototype ofSkyLod has already been implemented and tested on theplatform of ASIA-2R satellite and CERNET (ChinaEducational and Research Network). SkyLod is provedto be efficient, flexible and practical in supporting bulkresource distribution.
