Extending Real-Time Collaborative Editing Systems with Asynchronous Communication

The integration of synchronous and asynchronousmodes of communication and the possibility ofalternating them along the stages of a project is animportant issue for the customization of thecollaborative work in the engineering domain. In thispaper we present the synchronous and asynchronousmodes of collaboration for two main classes ofdocuments, namely, textual and graphical. We describehow the real-time collaborative systems that we havedeveloped can be extended to support alsoasynchronous functionality. We present two approachesfor the asynchronous communication: synchronizing theprivate workspace against a central repository andagainst another private workspace.
