The use of ABAQUS to simulate temperature and residual stress fields in unclosed hoop weldments

The welding procedure of thermal and mechanics in unclosed hoop weld on the thin structure was simulated by FEM using ABAQUS codes. The 3-D solids elements are used in FEM model. A graded mesh adopted to reduce calculation time and increment control was introduced to ensure stable temperature prediction. In the simulation temperature depended material properties are considered as well as the convection and radiation as boundary condition. On the basis of considering the affects of keyhole,a power distribution function applied to the material, was created by a conical heat source to simulate heat source by using the subroutine code FLUX in ABAQUS. The temperature field, residual stress field and the deformation of unclosed hoop weld were obtained and the results are discussed. The results show that the maximum of equivalent stress and hoop tensile residual stress in the area of weld end point is much larger than that in other area. The former exceed yield stress at room temperature and the later are less than forty percent of yield stress. The larger hoop tensile stresses are always regarded as the driven force of weld fracture.
