Influence of Mn on the Color of Ferric Oxide Powders

The authors revealed that the inpurity Mn in the ferric oxide is the main factor of the color difference between the ferric oxide powder from the sulfate type process and from chloride type. The mechanism of the influence of the Mn atom, which is substituted for the Fe atom, is investigated by the DV-Xa calculation method. As a result, ferric oxide powders from the sulfate type process and from chloride type show different color trends. Color of ferric oxide powders vary from bright red to subdued red as Mn content increases. Change of the electronic density of states (DOS), which is caused by Mns 3d electronic orbital, is observed by substituting Mn atom for Fe atom. It is considered that change of DOS is engaged in absorption of light with a specific wavelength, therefore the color of ferric oxide powders vary with Mn content.
