Removal of carbamazepine in an enhanced membrane bioreactor with small dose addition of powdered activated carbon
Carbamazepine(CBZ),a typical antiepileptic pharmaceutical. Is used in a large quantity throughout the world. Its removal in a membrane bioreactor (MBR)was investigated in detailin this paper.More than 70 days’continuous operational results showed that the enhanced MlBR with the addition of 500mg powdered activated carbon(PAC)kept 30%-40%removal of carmabazepine even after 36 days of operation(about 52OL of the volume of treated water). While almost no removal of carbamazepine was observed without the addition of PAC after one month’s operation. In addition. The sludge.Water partition coefficient(Kρ)of carbamazepine increased from 0.057L/gMLSS before PAC dosing to 0.597L/gMLSS after PAC dosing.Which indicates that PAC enhanced the adsorption capacity of activated sludge for carbamazepine to a certain extent.According to the calculations of carbamazepine’s mass balance before and after PAC dosing.it was suggested that PAC addition enhanced not only adsorption of carbamazepine but biodegradation of carbamazepine.
