High Efficiency Motors: A New Motor Technology Option

The new Nova Torque permanent magnet motor technology looks like a traditional motor from the exterior but operates at significantly higher efficiency, produces higher output torque per motor diameter and is still economical to manufacture. This improved motor performance is the result of a novel combination of axial and radial motor designs using a dual conical air gap geometry. The advantage of higher motor efficiencies goes beyond mere electrical power savings to include lower motor heat generation and easier packaging. This is especially important in applications such as refrigeration and hand-held tools. The efficiency of this motor can be set by adjusting the length of the motor without changing the diameter. Other motor features include the ability to operate at very high rotational speed, low detent, low torque ripple, and high torque overload capability. This motor covers a wide power range from fractional to medium-sized integral horsepower motors and can be operated as a brushless motor, a brush DC motor or even as a 3-phase AC motor. This paper will cover some of the unique design aspects and measured performance data of this motor technology and how it can be best utilized in appliance designs. In addition, an efficiency calculation program used in designing energy efficient permanent magnet motors is discussed.
