On-demand Software Streaming System for Embedded System
Many embedded computers are running with extremely limited resources and the need for optimizing resource utilization is increasing. In this paper we present the design and implementation of software streaming system that can reduce user waiting time and improve storage utilization. While traditional operating system loads program from local storage, software streaming system loads it from a remote server. The software streaming server divides executable file into basic code blocks and sends only the required code blocks instead of the whole file. We have implemented the streaming system on the embedded Linux using a streaming file system. Experimental results show that our streaming system can save storage up to 50%. Using our software streaming technique, embedded system can provide shorter waiting time to users when using new application as compared to traditional system.
