18O ISOTOPE EXTRACTION FROM MOLECULAR OXYGEN BY LOW TEMPERATURE RECTIFICATION
A scheme of a new plant for extraction and enrichment of heavy isotope 18O by method of low temperature rectification of molecular oxygen is presented. The plant is realized as an additional block of rectification being a part of a big industrial air separation plant (ASP). Efficient isotope extraction is carried out at pressure from 20 to 50 kPa and temperature of 80 ... 85K. Final concentration of product isotope 16O18O is 97 vol. pct (i.e. 49.2 vol. pct of 18O) from ambient 0.2 vol. % In order to raise 18O concentration it is suggested to associate it with hydrogen and apply additional stage of H218O rectification. This method suggests such distinguishing features as low energy consumption (19.3 kWhr/ (gm 16O18O)) and short duration of start-up company. A low temperature assembly consists of three stages and contains 7 rectification columns with spiral-prismatic random packing. The assembly is 30 m high with outside diameter of 1.6 m. The paper examined scientific and economical aspects of 18O extraction.
